On January 20, 2009 the President, in his inaugural speech, called upon Americans to unite and act. His powerful words of “our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness” was a call to action. Through the idea of our "patchwork heritage" we become powerful, our different shapes and sizes sewn together for one common purpose. This is the idea that the Patchwork Heritage Quilt celebrates.

The front of the quilt is comprised of 13 different fabrics representing our original 13 colonies, while the reverse of the quilt features the President's inaugural speech highlighting the words "patchwork heritage".
